Flolan Test
Study
The
most exciting advance in the treatment of PPH has
been the introduction of intravenous prostacyclin
or Flolan. Flolan became clinically available for
PPH in 1996, but has been used experimentally for
over seven years. Flolan can markedly reduce symptoms,
reduce pulmonary artery pressures, and most importantly
improve the prognosis of many patients with severe
forms of PPH. Prostacyclin is a naturally occurring
relaxing factor released by the lining cells of
normal arteries. Patients with PPH do not produce
sufficient prostacyclin and have excessive naturally
occurring constrictors such as endothelin. The
initial benefit of Flolan may be seen within days,
but the maximal effect is delayed to as long as
three months.

What is PPH? PPH or primary pulmonary hypertension is condition is often fatal and is primarily found in female patients aged 20-40 years old. PPH a rare condition in which the blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs is abnormally high. The cause of PPH - primary pulmonary hypertension is believed to be linked to certain diet drugs, weight loss drugs Pondimin (fenfluramine), diet drug combination Fen-Phen, and Redux (Dexfenfluramine), ephedra, ma huang and other natural ephedrine alkaloids. It is considered a progressive lung disease, often leading to congestive heart failure, respiratory failure, and eventually death.
