St. John's Wort & PPH Dangers of St. John’s Wort
Primary Pulmonary Hypertension (PPH) has been linked to usage of St. John’s Wort. In fact, St. John’s Wort, a herbal remedy, is used to treat many medical conditions, including depression, sleep disorder, mental stress, anxiety and nerve pain. St Johns Wort (Hypericum perforatum) is also known as hypericum, Klamath weed and goat weed. Despite its popularity, St. John’s Wort is not proven for this use and, in fact, research has shown St. John’s Wort to be no more an effective therapy for moderate to severe depression than a placebo and often causes severe problems and dangerous drug interactions when used with Indinavir, Irinotecan, Cyclosporine, Digoxin, Digoxin, Digoxin, Warfarin, Birth control pills and Antidepressants. In 2000, the FDA issued a warning about serious and possibly deadly drug interactions when used with St. John’s Wort. Further, when St John’s Wort is combined with some antidepressants, St. John's Wort may actually increase the side effects such as nausea, depression, anxiety, headache, and mental confusion. Recent medical studies have linked St. John’s Wort and PPH - Primary Pulmonary Hypertension. Other herbal diet pills and nutritional suplements with ephedra, ma huang or PPA-phenylpropanolamine have also been linked to causing PPH.
